What & Where is Bukit Lawang?
Bukit Lawang is a small village situated 90 kilometers northwest of Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra, Indonesia. It lies on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park and is famous for being one of the best places in the world to see semi-wild and wild Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat.
Mount Leuser National Park
Covering an area of 1,094,962 hectares, Mount Leuser National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. It is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth and the only remaining habitat where Sumatran orangutans, tigers, elephants, and rhinos still coexist.

National Park Guidelines
- Do not enter the park without a licensed guide.
- Do not touch, feed, or call out to the orangutans.
- Keep a minimum distance of 10 meters from the wildlife.
- Do not visit the park if you are sick (orangutans can catch human diseases).
- Do not leave any trash behind. Bring all your rubbish back out.
- Do not remove any plants or animals from the forest.
- Keep noise levels to a minimum to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
- Stay with your group and follow your guide's instructions at all times.
- Do not use flash photography.
